A team specialists from St Thomas' hospital shared learning on emerging cardiovascular treatments, pioneered in Europe, with more than 800 of the world’s top cardiovascular experts at PCR London Valves, the largest cardiovascular conference of its kind in October 2011.

Live demonstrations of life-saving surgery pioneered in Europe and now being adopted elsewhere, such as aortic valve replacement, were broadcast to the conference from St Thomas’ Hospital in London and Bern in Switzerland.

The conference was hosted by King’s Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre in conjunction with cardiovascular group PCR, from 16 to 18 October at the Park Plaza Hotel in London.

It is the brainchild of cardiac experts from King’s and Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals, both part of King’s Health Partners, which jointly form the biggest cardiac surgical unit in the UK.

The units run a unique programme for transcatheter aortic valve intervention and surgery - the largest of its kind in the UK – and has helped make this kind of innovative treatment available to NHS patients.
